It would be crazy to assume that because this change-log hasn’t been updated since last September, nothing has been going on at Monk Falls.
(Defensive? Yes. Yes.)
- Over the past few weeks (like, eight), in addition to moving Monk Falls over to a new server then out of a subdirectory and into the root, I’ve rewritten every one of its 26 posts and 6 pages, all but two of its template files, and tweaked the scripts to the point of a 97 YSlow score, up from a 63. I’ve also made some improvements to the site’s navigation, adjusted some of the styles and added a lot of new tags (”markers”).
End.

Fine tuning:
- Re-wrote caption for expanded Well-Come image
- Trying to develop Hub Cap Halo to Go. It’s funny that the whole story is encapsulated in this entry, and that because I’ve been focusing on much more localized areas of the text and where these fragments fit in not only to Monk Falls but to the hobotrain network project as a whole, I hadn’t realized (recognized) that the full Monk Falls text-parcel hadn’t been surveyed yet. I imagine that I may never be able to capture this pre-history satisfactorily in the present-perfect at (in) Monk Falls, but I do have some latitude in that the times and the themes are re-visited (albeit, briefly) in the past-perfect on Page 3 of Corner Legend at Tuttle’s Corner. So, while Hub Cap Halo to Go may grow to a relatively behemoth size before I abandon it, it’s the essential justification (context) for everything that comes afterward, so I’d be cowardly to avoid diving into it right now.

- Restructured page order, compressing time between what will be some of the piece’s earliest entries. I think that when I take down the password protection for Monk Falls, it would be best if there is more to hold onto for readers at the beginning of the story, and the inclusion of several entries that I thought I would wait to put up have taken on greater importance than I initially anticipated they’d have. Whereas I’d originally intended to be sparing on the pathos at the outset, I now realize that in the same way I like an over-dressed salad, pouring a little extra pathos into the early part of the text might not be bad, either.
- Added Hectic, Hub Cap Halo to Go and Desa Kala Patra (which may be re-named eventually).
- Added Aloha to the Intratext index at Tuttle’s Corner. That piece has been up for months, so I must have over-looked adding it there very early on.
- I would like to finish Hub Cap Halo to Go, Hectic and Flee (nyc) before I take down the password protection.
End.

Today I’m starting to work on two pieces that will go between Lucky (’Disembarkation Point’) and (I think) Clock Out. I also need to clean out the cruft from ‘Flee’ and give a little more information about the hectic nature of NYC separation/departure.
In fact, I think I may change Flee’s title to ‘Hectic’ in order to deploy title: ‘Flee’ (or ‘Flee [NYC_1],’ e.g.) to
closely examineencapsulate the evolution and outcome of these (self-created) fight-or-flight scenarios (which themselves are only reconstituted to roughly 500 words) rather than describing the actual moment of departure, of which there will be many…. Because theme: ‘fight or flight decisions’ will recur with every departure (orientation change), I can employ ‘Flee (Place Name) as a title throughout with impunity.

- Added Clock Out, First Leg, Headlong to Lucky, and A, Quote, Yellow-Fingered Drifting Bum.
- Completely re-worked Well-Come. Unpublished drafts are viewable at postdelete.com
- Moved images, captions, text and tags from Flee to Headlong to Lucky because the entry was misplaced on the time-line. Kept Flee as the title for the entry because it is as or more appropriate to the new entry.
- Changed image associated with Lucky. I did this for several reasons: First, the new image is almost exactly contemporaneous with the subject matter of the piece while the original image captures an event occurring several years later and would be better utilized accompanying the description of that event in the text. Also, I think the image was a little upsetting to display at the front of the piece, even though it is in some ways more appropriate to the piece than the new image. The original image will appear toward the end of Leg 2, which more accurately depicts the placement of that image’s subject matter on the time-line.
- Renamed ‘Tags’ in PHP attributes, permalink settings and Archives pages to ‘Markers.’
- Renamed ‘Category’ in PHP attributes, permalink settings and Archives pages to ‘Orientation.’ (Main Archive page, 1989-1996, displays Orientations under the heading, ‘Retrieve by Place Name.’) Added Orientation links to items in the Routes✈ table where entries have been added for those locations. (At this time, most new entries seem to be oriented toward locations at the beginning and end of Legs 1 and 2.)
End.

- I need to re-think Well-Come. It’s the “home” page. I want to give real props to Scott so that he’ll be nicer to me about removing his (old) links from the footer, but I need to fatten up the intro a little bit, too. It could be done in a couple of sentences.
I also need to decide how (or, if) I want to feature new entries. As it is, they appear (as they should) along the Monk Falls time line, rather than in the order in which they were posted, which may make it difficult to follow the story as it is published. (I guess that’s what RSS is for, because I doubt very many people will ever read this.) I can also do something about the color for visited links. They’re too dark.
- Downgrade: Change images:
- Put thumbnail back with Light Rain
- Use full size image as thumb
- Use sunset_4.jpg (?) as full size image
[In the end I decide to stay in Ubud and toprecipitatebe a participant inwitness a crucial moment in itsdownfall intoevolutiondevelopment as a traveler’s center.]- Bats: Delete or change full size image to a larger version of the thumbnail.
- Lucky: This is going to start with the Polaroid as the thumbnail and go to the ‘punched’ image (same edit, same format, but bigger) on click-through. It’s more cause–>effect than effect–>cause this way. It will definitely be better. Trust me.

"Flee" (dated July 29, 1990) is in the wrong place. The piece either needs to be given a new name and moved forward in time two years, or to keep its name and be given a new image with new text. In principle I don’t have any problem with keeping it as it is, but the pick-up truck in the image accompanying the piece, and the cross-country trip on which the photograph was taken are from August, 1992, and because the whole piece is represented as journal entries, it would be better (easier to follow) if it begins at its true beginning, even if those journals weren’t used so religiously at first.
What won’t change is that where individual entries are (and will be) presented linearly, they aren’t (and won’t be) presented consecutively, one after another, as they appear in my journals, but will instead be generated as to appear somewhat randomly in their (correct) places along the Monk Falls timeline. For example, I’d been working for a long time on a series of entries that will comprise the ‘beginning’ of the story, about the first 4-6 weeks of a seven year span of time. After that, I’ll be working on a shorter series of entries, three days’ or so worth of journal entries, thematically related to the entries which appear at the beginning of the story, but occurring about nine months later. Over time, the entries for the intervening nine months will be filled in based on, and owing to, the contexts and exigencies of a number of superseding or meta- narratives which may be contained or described within and across the hobotrain network or elsewhere. But enough about this.
